Residential development consisting of a terrace of 3no. mews houses on a challenging urban site
The site, a disused council car park, was overlooked by neighbours whose rear elevations are a mere 7 metres from the site boundaries. This tight site and project brief presented a challenging design and construction opportunity.
Each house is arranged around a private south facing courtyard, extending the open plan ground floor living space. Large glazed doors open onto the courtyard garden, increasing the sense of light and space as well as large glazed windows in all rooms. A large opening rooflight above the stair allows daylight into the depth of the plan and natural stack ventilation in summer. The staircase was crafted to create a gallery space, library and home office to enhance the quality of the interior, both functionally and aesthetically. Light and space have been carefully curated to deliver an interior, which seems to exceed the dimensions of the overall building footprint.
Sustainability was at the core of the technical design, which included a bio-diverse living green roof, to provide diverse plant communities, increasing energy efficiency, minimising rainwater runoff volumes and enhancing the appearance for those overlooking in addition to an Air Source Heat Pump and Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery.
